The International Cetacean Sanctuary
Almost twice the size of Switzerland, the Pelagos International Sanctuary is home to the largest concentration of resident species of cetaceans in the entire Mediterranean: from the large fin whale to the agile striped dolphin.
The study and protection of these species are essential to maintain the correct balance in the marine ecosystem.
For this reason, since the 1990s various bodies and associations (including the WWF and Tethys Research Institute) have been committed to creating a large protected area of international level (which today includes Italy, France and the Principality of Monaco), officially established in 2001.
